Fourteen.
That’s how many years it has been since a New York Jets tight end posted 500+ receiving yards and 5+ touchdowns in an NFL season. Dustin Keller pulled it off in both 2010 and 2011.
Since then, there have been 125 instances of an NFL tight end hitting those benchmarks in a season. None were Jets.
It has been a rough ride for New York at tight end. But they finally have hope in the form of second-round pick Mason Taylor.
The rookie from LSU is projected to jump straight into the fire as New York’s clear-cut TE1. With his only competition being Jeremy Ruckert, Stone Smartt, Zack Kuntz, and Neal Johnson, Taylor will likely be a key component for the Jets in Week 1.
Throw in the Jets’ lack of depth at wide receiver, and Taylor could be as high as the Jets’ No. 2 weapon in the passing game.
Then, you have to consider the importance of the tight ends in Tanner Engstrand’s blocking scheme. In a run-first offense built around Justin Fields, which will also utilize plenty of two-tight end sets, Taylor will be counted on to execute some critical blocks in the run game.
Taylor is poised to have a lot on his plate for a rookie tight end. Is the 21-year-old prepared to take all of it on?
Only the film can give us that answer.
