The New York Jets have begun mandatory minicamp workouts with full participation from their young roster.
It’s a great sign that their new regime and coaching staff have the ears of their new team. New York is one of the younger rosters in the sport and continues to push for competition across the roster.
As with any workout session, Tuesday provided plenty of notes to keep an eye on.
We’ll go through the three biggest ones to keep an eye on moving forward.
Jets’ Notes From Minicamp
Joint Practice
Many coaches tend to be aggressive when it comes to finding a way to hold joint practices during training camp.
Some organizations believe in the importance of joint practices and actually hold more stock in those than preseason games. Other teams roll with the traditional mindset of having preseason games determine final roster spots.
We don’t know what Aaron Glenn will focus on most. We do know that the Jets will hold joint practices, though.
The Jets will hold a home-and-home joint practice with their cross-town rival New York Giants this camp ahead of their preseason matchup. That means there will be one joint practice in East Rutherford and one in Florham Park.
Injury Updates
There were a few important injury updates through the first day of minicamp. First, Jermaine Johnson, the team’s top edge rusher, continues to recover from a torn Achilles suffered early in thee 2024 season.
Glenn announced Tuesday that Johnson is expected to be ready for the 2025 season opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers. However, Johnson could begin training camp on the PUP list.
This isn’t really a major surprise. Achilles injuries take time to heal, and the Jets don’t want to rush him back.
Outside of Johnson, it appeared that wide receivers Malachi Corley and Arian Smith were working on the side field for most of the practice on Tuesday. Smith wasn’t seen during team drills, but he fielded punts as he continues to compete for a role on special teams.
Defensive Focus
New York will only go as far as their defense takes them. They have All-Pro caliber players at each level. If there has been one main theme from this group during offseason workouts, it is one that Glenn is thrilled to talk about.
“They are fast, they are really fast. I would say this, and we don’t have to coach this, and this is a really good thing, but we continue to stress it, is being able to pursuit,” Glenn said. “We have men on that defense that understand that, and when you watch practice, you see it.”
Glenn later emphasized the team pushing proper tackling and forcing takeaways as some of the main principles for the organization.
The Jets defense hasn’t been perfect through this last month, but they have shown the potential to be really good in 2025 across the board.
