Reporting live from New York Jets HQ in Florham Park, NJโEvery NFL player approaches training camp with a different mindset. For New York Jets linebacker Jamien Sherwood, itโs about continuing to thrust himself into a leadership role.
Speaking during New Yorkโs first official practice of the summer, Sherwood emphasized the importance of guiding younger teammates and setting the standard on defense.
“Just being a better leader, becoming a better leader as well, just bringing guys up the totem pole with myself,” he said. “Obviously, I started at the bottom myself and worked my way up, and again, just showing the rookies and the younger guys, you aren’t going to start at the top. It is a grind. Just learn everything you can from everyone else, and ultimately, when you get your opportunity, just be ready.”
Sherwood, 25, returned to the Jets on a three-year contract this offseason that could be worth up to $45 million, with $30 million guaranteed.
He was named the Jetsโ Curtis Martin Team MVP in 2024 after a breakout season in which he led all NFL linebackers with 98 solo tackles. The Auburn alum also chipped in two sacks and three pass deflections.
According to Pro Football Focus, Sherwood posted a 73.8 overall grade last season, good for 10th-best among 64 qualifying linebackers.
With C.J. Mosley officially retired, Sherwood is poised to inherit the mantle as the Jetsโ defensive leader and veteran voice in the locker room, a role heโs prepared to embrace fully in 2025.
