New York Jets general manager Darren Mougey is having an active week on special teams.

Two days after releasing undrafted rookie punter Kai Kroeger, Mougey released another undrafted specialist, rookie kicker Caden Davis, on Tuesday morning. In a corresponding move, the Jets signed Lawrence Toafili, an undrafted rookie running back from Florida State.

The release of Davis leaves Harrison Mevis as the only kicker on New York’s 90-man roster. Meanwhile, Kroeger’s release leaves Austin McNamara as the only punter on the team.

Most likely, the Jets are planning to replace Davis and Kroeger with new competitors for Mevis and McNamara throughout the rest of the summer. While Mevis and McNamara are not NFL rookies, neither has played in a regular season game. They are unproven players who require competition.

The Jets may have a backup plan in the works at kicker. On Monday, they hosted 40-year-old free agent Nick Folk for a tryout.

Folk kicked in 107 games for the Jets from 2010 to 2016, making 82.2% of his field goal attempts. He’s ascended to new heights in the late stages of his career, making an NFL-best 96.2% of his attempts with the Tennessee Titans from 2023 to 2024.

Toafili joins a deep Jets running back room, where he will push for a practice squad spot. The six-foot, 185-pound rusher played five seasons for the Seminoles, rushing 340 times for 1,895 yards (5.6 per carry) and 15 touchdowns. He also caught 92 passes for 905 yards and four touchdowns.
