After taking a big hit in the second half of the team’s 30-10 loss to the Buffalo Bills, New York Jets quarterback Justin Fields exited the game due to concerns regarding a potential concussion.

Speaking to reporters on Monday, head coach Aaron Glenn confirmed that Fields does have a concussion and has been placed in the NFL’s concussion protocol for this week.

The NFL requires players diagnosed with a concussion to work through a structured return-to-play process, though there is no fixed timetable for clearance. That uncertainty leaves open the possibility Fields could be sidelined for the Jets’ Week 3 matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday.

To be cleared, Fields must first show no symptoms and pass baseline cognitive exams. Only then can he move step-by-step from light conditioning to monitored weight training, then into non-contact football drills, and ultimately full practice before rejoining game action.

Prior to suffering the injury, Fields was having one of the worst games of his career, fresh off a breakout debut in the Green and White.

The Ohio State product completed three of his 11 passing attempts (27%) for 27 passing yards while picking up 49 yards on the ground throughout five carries, while losing a fumble for the first time since the 2023 season and finishing with a brutal 1.1 quarterback rating and -0.58 EPA per attempt, the lowest marks for those two categories throughout his 46 career starts.

Should Fields not be ready to go for Sunday, Glenn confirmed the Jets will center a game plan around backup quarterback Tyrod Taylor.
