Keys to victory
Protect Tyrod Taylor
With starting quarterback Justin Fields sidelined by a concussion, veteran Tyrod Taylor will make his first start for the Jets, and the offensive lineโs job is clear: keep him upright.
Taylor has been hampered by injuries throughout his career, and the Jets cannot afford to lose another signal-caller so early in the season. One more hit could force undrafted rookie Brady Cook into action, a scenario that would leave New York on its third quarterback before the schedule even reaches Week 4.
For the Jets to have any chance at stability today, their offensive front must ensure Taylor isnโt exposed to unnecessary contact in the pocket.
Take advantage of Tampa Bay’s offensive line injuries
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will be without three of their five starting offensive linemen on Sunday, including two-time All-Pro left tackle Tristan Wirfs, right guard Cody Mauch, and right tackle Luke Goedeke.
The Jets must capitalize on the mismatch by pressuring quarterback Baker Mayfield and forcing him out of rhythm. If New Yorkโs front fails to generate a consistent push, as they did last week against Buffalo, the game could quickly slip away.
Even without defensive end Jermaine Johnson, who is sidelined with an ankle injury, the matchup presents a prime opportunity for second-year edge rusher Will McDonald to break through and make his presence felt.
