Four-year, $130 million contract aside, you have to feel for Garrett Wilson.
The 25-year-old wideout is one of the best things to ever happen to the New York Jets. He has played every game in three-plus years with the team, consistently bringing world-class talent and competitive drive on a weekly basis, even as the losses stockpile.
Yet, the team around Wilson continues to waste his efforts. On top of the losing, Wilson has consistently been hung out to dry by a carousel of inept quarterbacks. Despite being well on his way to his fourth straight 1,000-yard season, it is easy to picture Wilson’s numbers being markedly better if his quarterbacks were merely league-average.
ESPN’s Dan Orlovsky thinks it may be time for Wilson to seek greener pastures.
Speaking on ESPN, Orlovsky ripped the Jets offense’s performance against Denver, calling it “as bad as an offensive tape as I’ve seen in years.” He highlighted the fact that Wilson was consistently open, and floated the idea that Wilson should consider pushing his way out of New York.
“I think they have to entertain trading everybody of value. Absolutely, because you’re 0-6. It doesn’t look promising. I just don’t know when the player says it. If you’re Garrett Wilson, you’ve done [four] years of this now. At some point…”
Wilson just signed a four-year, $130 million extension with the Jets this past offseason. It ties him to the organization through 2030.
If Wilson badly wanted out of New York, he had an opportunity to make it happen, but money talks, and he ultimately re-upped with the franchise that chose him 10th overall in 2022.
READ MORE: 62-0 to 62-1: Jets just pulled off a loss the NFL has never seenRelationships can fracture quickly in the NFL, though. In New York’s loss to Denver this Sunday, Wilson was seen screaming at head coach Aaron Glenn following a botched game-management sequence at the end of the first half. Asked after the game about his outburst, Wilson expressed displeasure with Glenn’s approach.
“I just didn’t know exactly what the plan was. Once I figured it out, I was disappointed. I’ll just say that.”
For now, Wilson remains in green. His status for the Jets’ upcoming game against the Panthers is uncertain, as he will undergo an MRI for a knee injury suffered late in the team’s loss to the Broncos.
