For the first year and a half of his NFL career, New York Jets wide receiver Adonai Mitchell had struggled to prove he belonged amongst the pros.
A 2024 second-round pick of the Indianapolis Colts, Mitchell played in just 25 games for his former team, failing to prove he was worthy of his high draft status.
In those appearances, Mitchell recorded just 32 receptions for 464 yards. He also had four drops along the way, plus an embarrassing fumble in a 27-20 loss to the Los Angeles Rams this season, in which he caught a 75-yard pass but celebrated prematurely as he crossed the goal line.
Following those struggles, the Colts benched Mitchell, and soon thereafter, they shipped him to the Jets.
After Sunday’s 27-24 win over the Atlanta Falcons, New York should be thrilled with what they saw from the 23-year-old.
Mitchell’s breakout
New York was adamant from the very beginning that Mitchell was not a “throw-in” as part of the trade that sent All-Pro cornerback Sauce Gardner to Indianapolis.
In the Jets’ win over Atlanta, Mitchell showed exactly why.
The former Colt recorded a career-high eight receptions for 102 yards and his first career NFL touchdown. His ability to stretch the field was a key reason for the Jets’ comeback victory.
More than that, he impressed the Jets’ starting quarterback, Tyrod Taylor, along the way.
“AD is a very special talent,” Taylor said. “Watching his routes and routes on air, watching how he practices every day, it means a lot to him. If you put the ball around him, he’s going to catch it.”
Mitchell’s performance was massive for the Jets. In what has become a lost season, the young receiver showed the traits that made him a top prospect in last year’s draft. Additionally, his intangibles off the field have caught the attention of the Jets’ coaches and veteran players.
If the young wideout keeps it up, he could alter the Jets’ long-term plans.
Jets receiver outlook
Among the many needs that the Jets will need to solve in the 2026 offseason, finding a quality second receiving threat opposite Garrett Wilson is one of the most pressing.
There will be plenty of options for New York in free agency and the draft. The best possibility for the Jets’ future, though, would be if Mitchell (or even fellow newly acquired wideout John Metchie III) can step up and be that second option in the passing attack.
Mitchell is only in the second year of his rookie deal and is under contract for two more years beyond the 2025 season as a member of the Jets. That leaves his annual salary in a manageable place for the organization.
If Mitchell continues to play well, New York could bypass the receiver position in free agency and instead look to push premium assets toward positions like defensive line, linebacker, or cornerback.
It would also leave them with more assets to make a trade for a quarterback, a scenario that becomes increasingly likely as New York stockpiles wins down the stretch.
There are still five games left in the 2025 seasonโplenty of time for the Texas product to prove he belongs as an everyday starter in the NFL.
If Sunday’s performance was any indication, Mitchell could very well alter New York’s long-term roster-building process.
