According to New York Jets head coach Aaron Glenn, quarterback Justin Fields will miss Sunday’s clash against the Miami Dolphins, while undrafted rookie Brady Cook will serve as the team’s backup behind Tyrod Taylor.
“We’ll see how he progresses going into next week for him to be ready for that,” Glenn told reporters on Friday, regarding Fields’ status.
Fields was added to the injury report on Thursday with what was described as “knee soreness” and was a limited participant in yesterday’s practice.
Through his three preseason outings, Cook connected on 66% of his passes for 235 yards, finishing with one touchdown and one interception while averaging a little more than six yards per attempt, good enough to beat out Adrian Martinez for New York’s QB3 role.
Yet the stat line doesnโt capture what popped on tape. His pocket navigation and poise consistently flashed, which Jets X-Factor’s Robby Sabo captured when breaking down the signal caller’s preseason reps.
“He’s going to be a quarterback in this league. I can’t tell you when, but he’ll be a quarterback in this league,” Glenn said of the Missouri product.
This marks the third time Cook will dress as the Jetsโ No. 2 quarterback, having previously filled the role in Week 3 at Tampa Bay and again in Week 8 against Cincinnati.
With just five games remaining in the season, and Fieldsโ chances of returning in 2026 seeming to fade by the week, the argument for handing Cook the full-time QB2 job has only grown stronger.
