According to New York Jets head coach Aaron Glenn, Brady Cook will serve as the team’s starting quarterback on Sunday against the New England Patriots, marking Cook’s third consecutive start for New York this season.
“Brady will be our starting quarterback,” said the first-year head coach on Monday morning.
“I think he [Cook] gives us the best chance to win, but we also want to evaluate where he is at, and that is a lot of guys on this roster. He wouldn’t be in there if he didn’t give us a chance to win games,” Glenn told the media after Sunday’s 29-6 loss to the New Orleans Saints.
Against the Saints on Sunday, Cook completed 22 of 35 passes (62.9%) for 188 yards, no touchdowns, and one interception while earning a 64.9 passer rating.
He struggled to push the ball downfield, completing primarily short throws and failing to connect on passes beyond nine air yards. Cook’s biggest issues surfaced against the blitz. When the Saints brought extra pressure, the Missouri product completed just two of six attempts for five yards, was sacked five times, and posted a 2.8 passer rating, according to Next Gen Stats.
While Glenn insists that Cook gives the Jets their best chance to win these final two games of the season, recent returns don’t back up that claim.
It is evident that the Jets are using the final two games of the season to evaluate some of their young talent, particularly under center with Cook, rather than going back to the well with one of Justin Fields or Tyrod Taylor, who have also gotten extended opportunities this season.
In the way fans jokingly frame it, Cook is the perfect “tank QB” on New York’s roster.
