The New York Jets have made another addition to their offensive coaching staff.
After hiring Frank Reich as their offensive coordinator on Tuesday and naming Alfredo Roberts their tight ends coach on Friday, Gang Green has hired Seth Ryan to serve as their passing-game coordinator for the 2026 season, per ESPN’s Rich Cimini.
Ryan, 31, spent the last five seasons in Detroit, serving as the Lions’ assistant wide receivers coach (2021-24) and assistant tight ends coach (2025). He crossed paths with Jets head coach Aaron Glenn, who was the Lions’ defensive coordinator from 2021-25.
He is the son of former Jets head coach Rex Ryan, who led New York to a 96-46 record over six seasons (2009-14). The team made the playoffs twice under Ryan’s watch (2009-10) and appeared in the AFC championship game during each run.
As depressing as it sounds, Ryan is the last coach to lead New York to the playoffs, as the organization’s whopping 15-year postseason drought is the longest among teams in North America’s four major sports (NFL, NBA, NHL, MLB).
The younger Ryan worked under offensive mastermind Ben Johnson for his first four seasons in the Motor City before Johnson was poached to become the Chicago Bears’ head coach. He also worked alongside the Jets’ former offensive coordinator, Tanner Engstrand.
This is a significant promotion for the 31-year-old, who has not served as a primary position coach throughout his coaching career, which began in 2019 as an offensive quality control coach with the Los Angeles Chargers.
Despite hiring Ryan, the Jets still have several holes to fill across their offensive coaching staff, most notably the quarterbacks coach role.
