Things change quickly during an NFL offseason. New York Jets fans should know that well by now.
While rumors around the team are heating up entering the combine, fans should take them with a grain of salt.
Jets rumors don’t equal truth
Here are just a few of the “rumors” that have been making the rounds in Jets social media circles over the past few days.
- Bears cornerback Nahshon Wright is predicted to sign with the Jets via FOX.
- Giants wide receiver Wan’Dale Robinson and Seahawks cornerback Riq Woolen were named “best fits” for the Jets by ESPN.
- The Jets are predicted to draft offensive lineman Olaivavega Ioane, according to Daniel Jeremiah.
- Jets safety Tony Adams is expected to command interest as a starter, per ESPN.
As these rumors float around, it’s important to add context to everything at this point in the offseason.
Remember, free agency doesn’t begin for another almost four weeks. A lot is going to change from now until then.
Most conversations and substantive discussions about free agents, trades, and draft ideas take place during the NFL Scouting Combine. It’s when many general managers and coaches gather to begin throwing ideas around before they all return to their facilities to gear up for free agency.
Anything that hits the news from now until then is usually just baseless rumors meant to excite fans and keep them engaged around their teams. It’s an important reminder for football fans around the country who are craving news or get excited about the trinkets presented at this time.
It may be fun to get excited about football, but there’s nothing really substantial to be learned at this time of year.
All eyes should be on Indianapolis next week. Not only will the Jets be scouting the best prospects ahead of April’s draft, but they’ll also have a chance to kickstart potential roster moves heading into the regular season.
For now, though, fans should resist the urge to start an uproar over rumors.
