On Thursday, the New York Jets announced a trio of transactions.
The Jets re-signed tight end Jelani Woods and exercised exclusive rights tenders on a couple of defenders, defensive tackle Jowon Briggs and linebacker Marcelino McCrary-Ball.
Re-signing Woods
Woods, 27, was a Jets waiver claim last summer. The fanbase generated modest excitement over the August move as training camp entered its dog days.
Drafted by the Indianapolis Colts in the third round of the 2022 NFL draft, Woods has yet to figure it out at the professional level. Aside from his four games played this past season with the Jets, 2022 โ his rookie campaign โ represents the lone year when Woods even played.
Injuries have crippled Woods’s NFL career to this point. He missed all of 2023 with recurring hamstring issues. Turf toe surgery forced him to sit out all of 2024.
The details of Woods’s contract have not yet been disclosed.
On the defensive side, the Jets wisely used their exclusive rights tenders on a couple of players.
Tendered ERFAs
Briggs, 24, was one of the Jets’ lone bright spots in an otherwise muddy three-win season. New York acquired him in late August โ along with a seventh-rounder from the Cleveland Browns, in exchange for a 2026 sixth-round choice โ to help fill the need for more interior defensive linemen while heading into the season.
An exclusive rights free agent, simply put, is any player who has yet to accrue three seasons of NFL experience. Players with expiring contracts that have precisely three years of experience become restricted free agents. In this instance, another franchise issuing an agreed-upon offer sheet generates draft value as compensation for the team that could lose the player.
Tendered exclusive rights free agents, on the other hand, cannot negotiate with other teams. They are also signed to a league-minimum one-year contract.
Briggs, a seventh-round selection, originally signed a standard four-year rookie contract โ as is the case for every drafted player. However, his contract expired after 2025, thanks to his time on the practice squad in 2024.
Ball, 26, has three years of experience under his belt. Unfortunately for him, only one of his previous three is an accrued campaign (dressing in at least six regular-season games).
