For months, the New York Jets debated on which edge rusher prospect would be worthy enough to be the team’s second overall pick.
In the end, they went with the country’s best pass rusher last season.
New York selected Texas Tech edge rusher David Bailey with the second overall pick in the 2026 NFL draft. Bailey is the highest player drafted out of Texas Tech since running back Donny Anderson was selected by the Houston Oilers in 1965.
Bailey is coming off a dynamic season for the Red Raiders, where he led the country in sacks with 14.5 and tackles for loss with 19.5. He was a consensus All-American and a key part of Texas Tech’s run to the College Football Playoff.
The Jets finished last in the league in sacks last year and second-worst in pressure rate. By selecting Bailey, they get a proven pass rusher who can come in and hopefully change life for their young defense.
The move won’t come without its questions, though. New York was torn between the likes of Bailey and Ohio State edge rusher Arvell Reese, who many scouts believed was the best non-quarterback in the 2026 class. Reese’s versatility as both an edge rusher and off-ball linebacker, coupled with Bailey’s mediocre run defense, made the decision at two a difficult one for Gang Green.
In the end, New York needs edge rushers who can get after the passer. Bailey was the best player to do that last season.
And the Jets are hoping for similar results at the NFL level.
