The NFL is set to officially reveal its full 2026 schedule on Thursday, May 14, at 8 p.m. EST.
Until then, the league will be keeping its social media gears churning by drip-feeding fans with sporadic reveals.
We received one of those reveals on Monday morning. While it does not directly involve the New York Jets, it provides fans with some clarity on where the Jets will be opening the 2026 season.
It has been announced that the New York Giants will open the 2026 season with a home game against the Dallas Cowboys, marking the first Sunday Night Football game of the year.
This means that, barring a shocking announcement that the Jets will host the league’s opening Monday Night Football game, the Jets will open the season on the road.
Seen below are the Jets’ nine road opponents in the 2026 season. So far, none of these teams have had a game announced for Week 1, so they are all on the table as potential Week 1 opponents for the Jets.
- Buffalo Bills
- Miami Dolphins
- New England Patriots
- Kansas City Chiefs
- Los Angeles Chargers
- Chicago Bears
- Detroit Lions
- Tennessee Titans
- Arizona Cardinals
It is worth noting that one of the Chargers, Bears, and Patriots will likely be tabbed to visit the Seattle Seahawks for the 2026 kickoff game.
That leaves us with a few intriguing possibilities for the Jets’ season opener.
One fascinating option could be the Tennessee Titans, who have become something of a “Jets South”. It will be the Titans debut of former Jets head coach Robert Saleh, along with former Jets defenders Jermaine Johnson, John Franklin-Myers, Solomon Thomas, and Tony Adams.
New York could also be tabbed as the first visitor to the new Highmark Stadium in Orchard Park. It would be a continuation of tradition, as the Jets were both the first and last visitors at the old stadium. Buffalo defeated New York 9-7 on Sept. 30, 1973, when the building was known as Rich Stadium. Over 53 years later, they closed the 2025 season with a 35-8 win over the Jets on Jan. 4, 2026.
In terms of storylines, those seem to be the two best contenders for the Jets’ season opener, and we know that storylines have come to be a major factor in determining Week 1 games. Last year, it was Aaron Rodgers’ return to MetLife Stadium. Back in 2021, the Jets kicked off in Carolina to see their old franchise quarterback, Sam Darnold.
Still, the Jets could just as easily end up starting their season with one of the more nondescript matchups, whether it’s Arizona, Los Angeles, or Miami. But given the NFL’s flair for the dramatic, don’t be shocked if the Jets’ season begins in Nashville or Orchard Park.
What we do know is that the Jets will be kicking off on the road, barring an utter shock of a scheduling decision by the NFL.
