Who will it be? Which NFL team will receive the pleasure (or potential pain) of squaring off against the New York Jets in Week 1 of the 2026 season?

Although the answer to that question remains unknown, breadcrumbs keep appearing on the floor.

It won’t be against the Buffalo Bills in their new stadium grand-opening, who are slated to get that party started in Week 2 against the Detroit Lions. The odds are also solid โ€” yet not 100% certain โ€” that the Jets will start on the road, given that the New York Giants host the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday night.

With the official NFL schedule release set to come our way on Thursday night, let’s highlight some of the things to watch for in the days leading up to the primetime event.

The Jets’ opponents

We have known for some time which opponents will show up on the 2026 New York Jets schedule. After all, thanks to the league’s rotational and ironclad system, opponent information is known the moment Week 18 ends each season.

Home

  • Buffalo Bills
  • Miami Dolphins
  • New England Patriots
  • Denver Broncos
  • Las Vegas Raiders
  • Green Bay Packers
  • Minnesota Vikings
  • Cleveland Browns

Away

  • Buffalo Bills
  • Miami Dolphins
  • New England Patriots
  • Kansas City Chiefs
  • Los Angeles Chargers
  • Chicago Bears
  • Detroit Lions
  • Tennessee Titans
  • Arizona Cardinals

Of note, the Jets have the 12th hardest schedule in the NFL this year, based on last season’s winning percentages. A major reason for this is that the AFC East boasted two playoff teams in 2025, and the NFC North and AFC West each sent multiple teams to January’s tournament.

In reality, though, the Jets’ schedule shouldn’t be too overwhelming.

Jets’ juiciest games

Every game in the AFC East is extremely important for the Jets this season. The team must demonstrate competency across the board, which is something they simply haven’t done in the last few years.

While including the divisional foes, three games stand out above the rest for various reasons.

Tennessee Titans (road)

The Jets will head to Nashville this year to face their former head coach, Robert Saleh. For all the positive work Saleh did to try to make the Jets better, he failed miserably on the offensive side of the ball, and his defense faltered down the stretch of his run.

A 20-36 record was never going to cut it.

Aaron Glenn is off to an even worse start to open his tenure in New York.

A victory over their former coach could be a powerful message to Jets owner Woody Johnson that the team has always been better off in this new era of football. A loss will only exacerbate concerns about this coaching staff.

It won’t be enough to be in a game against the Tennessee Titans; the Jets need to win this matchup more than any other this year.

New England Patriots (home)

The Jets have not posted an above-.500 record in the AFC East since 2010. That’s 15 years since the last time New York won four games in its division for a single season.

Over the last five seasons, the team has gone 6-24.

It’s been ugly to say the least.

The New England Patriots return as AFC East champions and represented the entire conference in last year’s Super Bowl. They are the class of the division until proven otherwise.

This is why it’s extremely important for the Jets to come away with a win or prove tougher than they were last season against their biggest rivals.

Arizona Cardinals (road)

Another former Jets coach will host the team that fired him. Mike LaFleur is entering a rebuilding year in his first year as the Arizona Cardinals’ head coach, but that’s the reason why this game is so big for New York.

If the Jets are going to be competing for wins this year, the Cardinals are the kind of team that they need to defeat. Should the Jets struggle throughout the year, then Arizona will be a competitor for the top overall pick in the 2027 NFL draft.

It’s only in that tanking mindset that a loss to the Cardinals would be something the fanbase would like to see.

Perhaps most importantly, the timing of this game means everything. The two organizations are still searching for a fresh-faced franchise quarterback, so a late-season affair could potentially feature anti-winning narratives.
