After a three-win season in which they were outscored by over 200 points and picked off zero passes, the New York Jets were rewarded with the second overall pick in the 2026 NFL draft.
With this pick, the Jets’ goal was to land a player special enough to eliminate the struggles that allowed them to land him in the first place.
The Jets ultimately decided to choose Texas Tech’s David Bailey in a minor surprise. They passed on Ohio State’s Arvell Reese after months of Reese being the consensus favorite to be the pick.
When it comes to pass rushing, few analysts or fans have concerns about Bailey. He offers a rare blend of elite athletic traits and elite production, suggesting he has a high chance of translating to a star NFL pass rusher. That, of course, is the main reason you take an edge rusher with the second overall pick: to get after the quarterback.
But there’s a reason that Bailey hasn’t quite garnered as much hype as your typical No. 2 pick, and why many fans preferred Reese in the slot: run defense.
Bailey’s run defense was maligned at Texas Tech. While he got after the quarterback at an unstoppable level, there are questions about whether he can be a three-down player in the NFL, which could prevent him from having the impact that you expect from a No. 2 pick.
Are those concerns legitimate? Is Bailey’s run defense as concerning as many believe?
Or should Jets fans generally be more ecstatic about the all-around potential of their team’s No. 2 overall pick?
In the latest edition of Blewett’s Blitz, we answer all of those questions and more in a full-fledged breakdown of Bailey’s All-22 film.
