Just a few days after Jets X-Factor’s Stefan Stelling projected what his new contract could look like, New York Jets right guard Joe Tippmann is set to sign a four-year extension with the team.
According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Tippmann has agreed with the Jets on a “big” four-year contract extension, with the terms yet to be revealed.
Rapoport added that the deal is for four years and $66.4 million with $34.9 million guaranteed.
The $16.6 million salary currently ranks 14th-highest among guards.
Tippmann, who turned 25 in March, was drafted by the Jets in the second round of the 2023 draft. Initially chosen as a center, Tippmann started out at right guard due to injuries, before closing out his rookie season at center.
Tippmann started all 17 games at center for New York in 2024. He was set to reprise the role in 2025 after winning a competition with Josh Myers, but due to a late injury to Alijah Vera-Tucker before the season, Tippmann was forced to slide over to right guard, while Myers replaced Tippmann at center.
While Tippmann struggled out of the gate following the late position change, he settled in as one of the NFL’s best guards for the latter two-thirds of the season. Across 11 starts from Week 7 on, Tippmann led all right guards with an 81.4 pass-blocking grade at Pro Football Focus. He also ranked 16th out of 37 qualifiers with a 66.2 run-blocking grade.
The guard position has been a smooth fit for Tippmann, who struggled with snap accuracy at center. As a guard, that issue is negated, while Tippmann also gets the opportunity to provide more value in pass protection, since guards spend more time than centers in one-on-one pass sets against star pass rushers.
