When the New York Jets traded a sixth-for-seventh pick swap to acquire Jowon Briggs last August, they thought they were getting a solid rotational run-stuffer.
Nobody could have anticipated what was coming.
After the Jets traded Quinnen Williams midway through the season, Briggs was thrust into a starting role. Out of nowhere, he became one of the league’s best pass rushing defensive tackles over the second half of the season.
From Weeks 10-18, Briggs’ name was consistently seen beside players like Chris Jones, Jeffery Simmons, and even Williams himself on the leaderboards for interior pass-rush production. He was racking up pressures and QB hits at an elite level.
The numbers are staggering. According to Pro Football Focus, Briggs had the best pass-rush win rate among defensive tackles from Weeks 10-18 at 19.5%. Right behind him were Williams (19.4%), Jones (19.0%), and Simmons (18.0%), three guys who consistently earn Pro Bowl trips.
This was coming from a second-year player who was getting his first career NFL starts. Not to mention, he was already known for his quality run defense.
Put it all together, and it seems like the Jets might have an up-and-coming star at the defensive tackle position.
Is that really the case? Does Briggs’ film show that he has legitimate star-caliber tools? Was he as good as his numbers say?
In the latest edition of Blewett’s Blitz, we answer all of those questions in a film breakdown of Briggs’ 2025 season.
