When the New York Jets selected Mason Taylor with the 42nd overall pick in the second round of the 2025 NFL draft, the hope was that he could become their tight end of the future.
In his rookie year, Taylor showed the potential to be that kind of player. He seized the Jets’ TE1 role, leading the unit with an average snap count of 81%. While the box-score stats did not jump off the pageโ44 receptions, 369 yards, one touchdownโTaylor impressed with his contested catching and progress as a blocker.
At just 21 years old in his rookie year, Taylor was considered a player who might need some time to reach his ceiling. For him to look as solid as he did suggested that he might be in store for a major leap in 2026.
Then the Jets went out and shocked the world by drafting Oregon tight end Kenyon Sadiq with the 16th overall pick in the first round of the 2026 draft.
Now, despite his solid rookie campaign, Taylor’s future looks a lot different. He is no longer the biggest investment in the tight end room. That title belongs to Sadiq, who the Jets clearly have high hopes for.
But Sadiq, who will also be 21 in his rookie year, is considered a project in his own right.
As Sadiq develops his all-around game, should Taylor still be considered the Jets’ TE1 going into 2026? Did his rookie year show the skill set of a player who can handle that role? How is he coming along as a blocker?
In the latest episode of Blewett’s Blitz, we answer all of those questions and more in a full film review of Mason Taylor’s rookie season, seen below.
The full Taylor film review focuses on his technique as a blocker, route-runner, and pass-catcher, revealing his ceiling as an NFL tight end and the ideal role he should play for the Jets in 2026.
