One of the main stories surrounding the New York Jets during the NFL’s dead period was the alleged battery incident involving quarterback Geno Smith, a case that was later deemed inactive by law enforcement.
Speaking to reporters Tuesday, Smith said he regretted being part of an incident that became a distraction for the team and was glad to finally move on.
“I really hate the fact that something I was a part of could’ve been a distraction for this team, because a lot of hard work has been put in…I’m happy that I’m able to put this behind me.”
Smith, along with the Jets’ other veterans, reported to Florham Park on Tuesday for training camp, which begins on Wednesday.
As the Jets renovate their facility, only seven practices will be open to fans this summer, with Aug. 1 being the only one open to non-season-ticket holders.
While battery accusations against Smith went viral on social media, the Davie Police Department will not bring forward charges, and the case is no longer active, which is great news for Smith and the Jets.
The 35-year-old is gearing up for the first season of his second stint with the Jets, where he has the potential to deliver the best quarterback play the organization has seen in quite some time.
While it’s not fair to assess a quarterback based on training camp stats, the upcoming month will be a great opportunity for Smith to gain more experience working with his new set of pass catchers and build a rapport with them before the season begins.
With the legal matter now behind him, Smith and the Jets can focus on football.
