Outside of a half-season with Davante Adams, New York Jets star wide receiver Garrett Wilson has lacked an imposing WR2 by his side to open things up.
The organization is hoping, however, that a revamped pass-catching corps will end that trend in 2026.
A key piece of that overhauled unit is Adonai Mitchell, who is entering his first full season as a Jet after being acquired at the 2025 trade deadline.
Speaking to reporters on Tuesday morning, Jets wide receiver coach Shawn Jefferson had high praise for Mitchell, affirming his belief that the 23-year-old is more than capable of being Wilson’s No. 2, and a really good one at that.
“If he [Mitchell] continues on this trajectory right here, he will be a really good Robin for our Batman [Garrett Wilson],” said Jefferson.
While it’s important not to put too much stock in it, given that it isn’t even created by the team’s coaching staff, Mitchell was listed as the Jets’ WR2 on New York’s first unofficial depth chart over first-round rookie Omar Cooper Jr.
If Mitchell sniffs his ceiling this year, which is certainly tantalizing given his elite separation ability, his acquisition could go down as Darren Mougey’s best move yet in two years as the Jets’ general manager.
Rightfully so, folks often tout the draft value Gang Green got back in exchange for Sauce Gardner (two first-round picks), but if Mitchell is able to develop into a high-level WR2, which is certainly in play, that is another excellent piece of compensation.
Mitchell still has a lot to prove in 2026, but his upside suggests that he might be much more valuable than just a “throw-in.”
