Well, that’s all she wrote for Geno Smith’s preseason with the New York Jets.
After leading a flawless drive during the team’s Week 2 preseason matchup last week, capped off with a 13-yard touchdown pass, he is not expected to play in the Jets’ preseason finale tonight against the New York Giants, per Brian Costello of the New York Post.
Smith, 35, missed the Jets’ preseason opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers due to ankle soreness before returning last week against the Pittsburgh Steelers, where he completed all seven of his passing attempts for 65 yards and a touchdown.
Most teams that play their starters throughout the first two preseason games sit them for the final game. The Jets seem to be following that same approach.
“Most of the Jets’ starters who have played this preseason are expected to sit out the preseason finale,” Costello added.
Fourth-round rookie Cade Klubnik will now get his final chance to prove that he can handle the team’s QB2 duties behind Smith before cutdown day on Sunday.
For Klubnik, it will be interesting to see how long he sticks in the game. If he’s out there for a limited stretch, it could hint that the Jets feel comfortable with him as their backup for the season. His playing time won’t fully reveal the Jets’ thought process, but it could certainly provide some helpful clues.
The annual Snoopy Bowl between Gang Green and the Big Blue will kick off tonight at 7:30 p.m. EST under the lights at MetLife Stadium.
