It’s game week, and the New York Jets are a little banged up at the running back position.
Given that, the team hosted veteran RB Jerome Ford for a workout, according to KRPC2’s Aaron Wilson.
Ford, 26, has appeared in 57 regular-season games (18 starts) over four seasons after being a fifth-round pick in 2022.
Throughout 340 carries, he has rushed for 1,463 yards (4.3 yards per attempt) and seven touchdowns. In the receiving game, he’s hauled in 107 of 138 targets for 647 yards and an additional five touchdowns.
In March, he signed a one-year deal with the Washington Commanders. However, he sustained a hamstring injury during training camp and was later released with an injury settlement.
Now, Ford’s workout suggests that his recovery from the injury has progressed and he is looking for a new team. The Jets have four RBs on their 53-man roster with Breece Hall, Isaiah Davis, Braelon Allen, and Kene Nwangwu.
However, they don’t have one on their practice squad. That is where Ford could potentially land.
Injury-wise for New York, Davis hasn’t practiced since early August after sustaining a knee injury.
While head coach Aaron Glenn expressed confidence that Davis would be ready for Week 1, his absence has been longer than expected. Glenn told reporters, “he will be out maybe a couple of weeks,” on Aug. 6.
Breece Hall, the Jets’ lead back, was held out of the squad’s final two preseason games after seemingly avoiding a significant injury on the training camp practice field. Ultimately, it turned out to be a minor groin issue for the Iowa State product, and according to Glenn, he should be ready to go for Sunday’s game.
With the Jets returning to practice this week ahead of Sunday’s regular season opener, there should soon be more clarity on the status of Davis and Hall.
