Garrett Wilson’s target share has been a major topic of conversation in New York Jets land, especially after Sunday’s loss to the New England Patriots, when he was targeted just six times.
Well, it appears the Jets’ coaching staff is well aware of those frustrations.
Speaking to reporters Thursday, offensive coordinator Frank Reich said Wilson’s involvement is a frequent topic of conversation with head coach Aaron Glenn.
“Listen, I/we, as a staff, coach, AG, are always in my ear if Garrett hasn’t gotten the ball for a little bit,” Reich said. “He’s like, ‘Hey, don’t forget. Boom, get our playmakers the ball,’ that kind of thing, which is good. We’re trying to get to him as early and as often as we can.”
We recently dissected the Wilson target narrative. At the end of the day, his sheer targets rank 13th in the league (48), which is a pretty high volume. It’s even 10 more than Ja’Marr Chase. So Wilson isn’t being completely left out of the offense.
However, getting him involved more consistently matters, too.
Take Week 5 against the Cleveland Browns, for example, where he reeled in three receptions for 70 yards and a touchdown on four targets during just the opening series.
After that, though, he caught just three of seven targets for 34 yards. Opposing defenses will obviously pick up on what’s working and adjust, but it’s also on Reich, the play-caller, to put Wilson in a role where he can consistently remain the offensive centerpiece, passing-wise.
Wilson’s situational use will be fascinating to watch over the next few weeks, but Glenn and Reich are looking to involve him “early and often.”
