After three wins in five games and improvements on the offensive side of the ball, it seemed like the New York Jets were finally turning a corner. Even the quarterback change to Tyrod Taylor had proven fruitful.
Until last week.
A 34-10 thumping at the hands of the Miami Dolphins, coupled with losing Taylor to a groin injury early in the contest, forced the Jets to move to an undrafted free agent quarterback in Brady Cook the rest of the way.
As the team prepares for Week 15, the quarterback position remains in limbo, as it has going into most games this season. It means that Justin Fields, who has been benched for poor performance multiple this year, could be thrust back into the starting lineup.
Jets address QB decision
If Aaron Glenn and the Jets were prepared to hand the starting quarterback keys back to Fields after Sunday, they at least played those cards close to the chest.
New York was noncommittal about the decision ahead of them before a road contest against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
“I’m interested in a quarterback that gives us the best chance to win,” Glenn said on Monday. “These guys are all professionals, and any time they have a chance to go out and perform with their teammates, that’s the only thing they’re thinking about.”
Fields missed Sunday’s contest against Miami due to a knee injury he suffered during the week of practice. That pushed Cook into the limelight for the first time in his NFL career.
Cook, expectedly, struggled in his debut, completing 14 of 30 passes for 163 yards, no touchdowns, and two interceptions (although he was not helped by multiple bad drops from his receivers, including a likely touchdown by John Metchie).
In nine starts for the Jets this season, Fields went 2-7 while throwing for just 139.9 yards per game, the worst mark in the league among quarterbacks with at least eight starts.
Fields’ complete inability to threaten defenses through the air led to his benching. Now, with Taylor banged up, it leaves Glenn in a difficult spot.
New York will have a few days to determine which quarterback gives the offense a better chance at winning in Jacksonville. If Taylor is unable to go next week, the decision falls between Fields and Cook.
Glenn’s comments on Monday demonstrate exactly what the team feels: they won’t feel pressured to return to Fields solely because of his veteran presence.
“Whichever quarterback that we have that’s ready to go, that guy will be ready to go.”
