It’s typically challenging for an athlete to make a positive impression on an NFL team without attending a whole training camp or participating in a workout session. It takes time to command respect in a locker room.
That wasn’t the case for New York Jets defensive tackle Harrison Phillips, though.
Phillips became a leader the second he stepped onto 1 Jets Drive.
The 29-year-old veteran, previously of the Buffalo Bills and Minnesota Vikings, was shipped to New York just weeks ahead of the first game of the 2025 regular season. While his numbers weren’t overly impressive, his leadership capabilities were significant to a young roster.
As the Jets prepare to begin the first stage of the 2026 offseason, it is Phillips who has the most important lesson for the team’s young players.
It’s a lesson that could very well turn the tide for the Jets in the future.
Phillips’ message to Jets players
Coming into the 2025 season, Phillips was one of the oldest players on the roster. He was brought in as a run-stuffing defensive tackle and played the part; he was an above-average run defender at his position, according to Pro Football Focus.
Phillips’ primary contribution to the Jets, though, has been off the field, assisting young defensive linemen in preparing for opposing players and schemes.
Following a dismal 3-14 mark this season, Phillips’ parting message to many of the team’s young players focused on the future with a positive outlook.
“When a season finishes like this, it’s very frustrating,” Phillips said. “And even I told the young players, the league average you are gonna play is three seasons. This is one of your three. This season was 33% of your career. You need to understand the urgency that this offseason takes.”
Phillips used that warning as a way to push the young talent on the roster to show up prepared when offseason workouts arrive.
New York’s veteran tackle understands that rebuilding a roster can take some time. But part of his message to the young players included a reminder that he wants to go out as a winner.
It’s up to the kids to hold up their end of the bargain.
“I said, you know, as an older player who is hopeful I can be here and be a part of the long-term plan for the next three, four years. I need you now,” he said.
Phillips is bringing a sense of urgency and understanding to the roster as it enters the 2026 offseason. He doesn’t want to waste his career as so many great Jets players have before.
His message to the young players on the roster not only highlights his commitment to the franchise but also to seeing the Jets’ rebuild through. He wants to win in Florham Park.
It’s the kind of message you hear from team captains.
For Phillips, that title might be heading his way soon if he maintains his leadership role.
