The New York Jets’ Week 1 matchup against the Tennessee Titans is eight days away, and Gang Green still doesn’t seem to have a starting kicker.

Following Jason Sanders’ poor end to the preseason after being declared the winner of the Jets’ kicking competition days prior, the team picked up Blake Grupe on the waiver wire.

Days after picking up Grupe, though, the team hosted several kickers for workouts, including seven-time Pro Bowler Justin Tucker.

Tucker, 36, was out of football for the 2025 season after a rough 2024. He was also accused of sexually inappropriate behavior by 16 massage therapists across eight spas in the Baltimore area, which contributed to his release from the Baltimore Ravens.

Should the Jets give him another NFL opportunity, though?

Does Tucker make sense for the Jets?

Even beyond the allegations, the Jets should not give Tucker another chance.

While he is one of the best kickers in NFL history, it’s important to keep in mind how bad his 2024 season was. The 36-year-old missed a career-high eight field goal attempts along with two extra point tries, totaling 10 overall missed kicks. That mark tied for the most in the league.

Altogether, he was successful on just 19 of his 27 field goal attempts, equating to a 73.3% conversion rate, which also set a career low.

Even before that, his conversion rate began to decline in 2022, after reaching 94.6% in 2021. For the 2022 season, he hit just 86% of his attempts, then 86.5% in 2023, before the number plummeted to 73.3% in 2024.

It’s also important to add his age: 36 years old. When you couple that with his declining statistics, it could be a very strong sign that he’s beginning to lose his stride.

While he wasn’t with a team for the 2025 season, he worked out with the New Orleans Saints before losing the tryout to Cade York, whom the Jets released earlier this summer. He also lost a job to Grupe with the Indianapolis Colts.

Once again, Tucker worked out for both of those teams this year and didn’t earn a spot on a 90-man roster.

Currently, it appears that the Jets’ best option is Blake Grupe. At the end of the day, whether it’s Grupe, Sanders, or anyone else, the Jets lack a clear-cut answer entering Week 1, which is concerning.

Out of any team in the league, the Jets can’t afford to lose games because of poor kicking, especially after a year when Nick Folk tied for the best field goal percentage in the league.

Still, the Jets should certainly steer clear of adding Tucker.
