Although the New York Jets’ injury outlook already looked pessimistic heading into Week 8, there was at least a glimmer of hope in the form of David Bailey’s availability. On Friday, head coach Aaron Glenn squashed that glimmer.
Glenn told the media that Bailey would not practice on Friday, and that he’s doubtful to play against the Las Vegas Raiders Sunday afternoon, per the official New York Jets communication transcripts.
Bailey joins a long list of injured Jets players who were already expected to miss the Raiders game.
“As far as the injuries are concerned, those who will not practice today and are out (for Sunday’s game) are T-Sweat (T’Vondre Sweat), Joseph Ossai, (and) Max Mitchell,” Glenn said before Friday’s practice. (David) Bailey will not practice today, and he’ll be doubtful for the game. So, we’re going to look at that as more of a game-time decision.”
The way Glenn ended the sentence suggests a slight chance that Bailey suits up for the Jets, but as far as doubtful designated players go in today’s NFL, it’s rare to see them ever dress.
The Jets’ No. 2 overall pick has been dealing with a groin injury all week. Glenn announced the injury during his weekly Monday presser, which forced the rookie to be a DNP in each of the three practices this week.
With Bailey joining Sweat and Ossai on the sideline, how Glenn deploys his defensive front is a curious topic at the moment. Rookie Darrell Jackson Jr. will undoubtedly see more time, while Will McDonald will also see an uptick at edge, opposite Kingsley Enagbare.
The injuries are even more troubling considering how poor the Jets have been against the run lately. Although issues have been there since August, Glenn’s rush defense put forth poor efforts in Detroit and Chicago, only to then plummet further against the New England Patriots and Miami Dolphins.
Fortunately, the opposing rushing attack this week isn’t anything to write home about. Klint Kubiak’s running attack ranks 31st in the NFL with a paltry 3.0 yards-per-carry mark โ with or without Ashton Jeanty’s bulletin board material.
Kickoff for the New York Jets’ Week 8 matchup against the Las Vegas Raiders is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. ET this Sunday from MetLife Stadium.
