As the New York Jets prepare for their Week 8 matchup against the Las Vegas Raiders, Gang Green has received some tough injury news regarding one of their top defensive players.
The Jets have announced they are placing defensive tackle T’Vondre Sweat on injured reserve. According to a report from ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, Sweat is expected to return at some point this season.
In a corresponding roster move, the Jets elevated defensive tackle Payton Page to the active roster.
Sweat suffered a knee injury in the second quarter of New York’s Week 7 loss to the Miami Dolphins. The Jets acquired him in a trade with the Tennessee Titans this offseason, and he has been one of the team’s most impactful defensive players so far.
Now, the Jets will be without him for at least the next four games, leaving a big void to fill on the interior of the defensive line. That’s both figuratively and literally, as the former Titan stands at 6-foot-4 and 366 pounds.
Fourth-round rookie Darrell Jackson Jr., who has flashed in recent weeks, should now have a strong opportunity to showcase his ability with more snaps. It will also be interesting to monitor Jowon Briggs, whose play has declined after an excellent 2025 campaign.
The Jets’ front seven has struggled enough in recent weeks; losing Sweat certainly won’t help it. The team will need strong contributions from players like Jackson and Briggs against both the pass and the run, especially with veteran Harrison Phillips’ persistent struggles at DT.
While Sweat’s presence against the run, in particular, will be missed, the good news is that the Raiders have struggled mightily to rush the ball this season. They rank 32nd in both rushing yards per game (55.8) and yards per attempt (2.8) over their active four-game losing streak.
It will be interesting to see if Jackson or Briggs can take advantage of increased snap counts, but losing Sweat is a big blow for the Jets, without a doubt.
