NY Jets fans land unsurprising ranking in money spent on alcohol

It’s not a huge surprise to see New York Jets fans atop this list

The recent past has not been very kind to fans of the New York Jets, and that fact has been reflected in their purchases of alcoholic beverages.

Finance Buzz surveyed over 1,100 NFL fans in July and August of 2023, with a minimum of 20 responses from each NFL team. They asked fans about their spending on concessions, alcohol, and merchandise.

A chart showing average fan spending by team in the NFL.

In this survey, fans of the Jets spent $57.78 per game on alcoholic beverages. That number came in at the highest of any team in the AFC, beating out the second-place Patriots by a whopping four dollars per game. Across the whole NFL, Jets fans’ alcohol purchases only trailed fans of the Bears ($58.76) and 49ers ($59.78).

New York’s struggles on the field are likely the driving force. It could be argued that the rollercoaster of ups and downs has, for lack of a better term, driven Jets fans to the bottle a bit more than other fanbases. Add in high prices at MetLife Stadium, and you get one of the highest alcohol purchase averages in the league.

The Jets were in the middle of the pack for concessions, with an average of  $115.28 spent per game. New York fell below the league average of $144.45 in merchandise spending, as their fans only spent $114.20 on average per year.

For the merchandise, the combination of a lack of success and an unpopular brand design could be two factors keeping the merchandise purchasing average down.

Heading into 2024, the Jets can flip some of these factors in the opposite direction. With a sharp new look and branding, fans could be more inclined to buy merchandise from the team. The potential success of the team would only add to that as well. Additionally, more on-field success could cause more purchases of food and non-alcoholic drinks.

As for the alcohol, though?  The best bet is that those numbers will stay the same but will be purchased for happier occasions than in years past.
