New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick oddly compliments the 2020 New York Jets—a surprise even for Belichick.
This one was oddly strange—even for Bill Belichick.
While on with WEEI in Boston, the New England Patriots suddenly-embattled head coach complimented the 0-8 New York Jets to high heaven.
“They’re a lot better than they were last year,” Belichick said.
Belichick, 68, is accustomed to talking up the opponent. Publicly respecting his team’s next opponent on the schedule is nothing new for the eight-time Super Bowl champion. Keeping it as bland and complimentary as possible is usually the target for Belichick.
It becomes interesting when realizing just how far Belichick traveled to speak kindly about these Jets, the very same team that’s registered just three passing touchdowns through eight games.
It’s so good that it deserves its own laugh track:

“I think they’ve played very competitively,” Belichick added. “The offense is improved … They get a little better each week.”
The Jets have been outscored 94-238 on the season which means the offense is averaging just 11.8 points per game—6.3 points behind the next-closest team (New York Giants with 18.1 points per game).
Belichick also went out of his way to tip his cap to head coach Adam Gase.
“It’s a scrappy, hard-nosed team, and coach Gase is always a great game plan coach every week,” Belichick said. “He presents a lot of problems every week for the defense schematically.”
Belichick’s 2-5 Patriots are currently preparing for the 0-8 Gase-led Jets. The two teams will meet this Monday at MetLife Stadium.
