Boyer, 49, will now coach his unit under a third Jets head coach this coming season. Initially hired by Todd Bowles in 2016, he was retained by Adam Gase in 2019 and will now lead Robert Saleh‘s special teams in 2021.
Saleh mentioned the numerous instances of praise on Boyer’s behalf as he assumed head-coaching duties in Florham Park, NJ a couple of weeks ago. And while reports that Boyer would be retained have surfaced, the official word didn’t hit until Thursday.
The Jets special teams unit finished a disappointing 29th in DVOA this past season, per Football Outsiders. In 2019, Boyer’s unit finished fourth, and the year prior saw his special teams finish first in the NFL.
New York also officially announced the hirings of five other staff members Thursday.
Additionally, Coach Saleh has added five more coaches to his staff.

Tony Oden will serve as a senior defensive assistant and cornerbacks coach. Marquand Manuel will take on the defensive backs/safeties role. Mike Rutenberg will handle the linebackers (second level position in a 4-3 base).
Jake Moreland will hop on as an assistant offensive line coach. And Michal Ghobrial joins the fray as a special teams assistant, similar to Leon Washington‘s role announced Wednesday.
Saleh’s coaching staff is taking shape with the league’s free-agency period on the horizon. How Joe Douglas handles free agency should be the next thing Jets fans keep an eye on moving forward.
