Richard Sherman, rumored as a possible NY Jets target, was booked on early Wednesday morning and is being investigated for a felony charge.

Free-agent cornerback Richard Sherman is under investigation for burglary domestic violence, a felony charge, in the State of Washington. The arrest on suspicion was first reported by ESPN.

Sherman, 33, was booked at 6:08 a.m. local time (9:08 a.m ET) at the King County Correctional Facility in Seattle and was denied bail, though ESPN has clarified in their report that this it is standard procedure to deny bail for those accused of domestic violence until they can appear before a judge (which, in Sherman’s case, would be Thursday afternoon the earliest).

A report from TMZ further clarifies that police were called to a residence in Redmond, WA whose occupants claimed a family member was trying to force his way in. When police arrived, Sherman reportedly became uncooperative and had to be subdued by a K9 unit. Redmond police later clarified that the residence belonged to Sherman’s in-laws.

In addition to the Redmond Police Department, the Washington State Police is investigating Sherman for a possible hit-and-run that occurred before the incident. A vehicle registered to Sherman was involved in a single-car accident and was found abandoned after hitting a concrete barrier owned by the Department of Transportation.

Sherman’s wife Ashley Moss defended him and told the Seattle Times that they were investigating every avenue to get Sherman out of jail.

“At this time we’re going to make no statements, except he didn’t harm anybody,” an emotional Moss told Bob Condotta, Sara Jean Green, and Patrick Malone. “My kids were not harmed in the incident. He’s a good person and this is not his character. We’re doing all right, just trying to get him out. I want people to know no one was injured.”

The Redmond Police Department held a press conference covering Sherman’s arrest on Wednesday afternoon. According to Chief of Police Darrell Lowe (video from Condotta), Sherman was “booked for residential burglary, with the domestic violence component, resisting arrest, and, malicious mischief”, the latter-most accusation stemmed from damage to the door of the residence.

Lowe clarified that there were no injuries from either the incident or Sherman’s allegedly impaired driving and that “The domestic violence component results from Mr. Sherman’s relationship with the occupants of the residence, not due to him physically assaulting his significant other.”

Sherman is currently a free agent after spending the last three seasons with the San Francisco 49ers. He is best known for his endeavors in Seattle’s famed “Legion of Boom” defense and has previously been linked to rumors of a return to the Seahawks, with whom he spent his first seven NFL seasons.

The star cornerback has also been linked to the Jets due to the team’s need at the cornerback position and his connection with head coach Robert Saleh, who coached Sherman over the past three years in San Francisco and also over Sherman’s first three years in Seattle. Sherman spoke glowingly about the Jets following their hiring of Saleh.

[[[UPDATE: 8:25 p.m. ET]]]: KIRO-FM (based in Tacoma) has obtained audio of Moss’ 911 call during the incident. Moss told the dispatcher that Sherman was expressing suicidal thoughts, further describing her husband as “drunk and belligerent”. She further says that Sherman had tried to fight her uncle and that he had drunk two bottles of hard alcohol. The audio was played on The Dori Monson Show and can be heard here (viewer discretion advised).
