New York Jets fans bring the heat for Adam Gase’s Hall of Fame appearance

Defying all odds, Adam Gase finally made it to the Pro Football Hall of Fame on Sunday.

The embattled former New York Jets head coach didn’t get a bust for his on-field efforts (or lack thereof) but was rather a guest of newly inducted quarterback Peyton Manning.

Prior to his head coaching stops in Miami and New York, Gase served as the Denver Broncos’ quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator during Manning’s record-breaking first two years with the team. Manning threw for 5,477 yards and 55 touchdowns during the 2013 season, both of which still stand as NFL single-season records.

Manning, who was inducted after his first year on the ballot over the weekend, reportedly played a role in the Jets’ hiring of Gase prior to the 2019 season. New York won nine games over Gase’s two campaigns at the helm, bottoming out with a two-win endeavor in 2020.

Despite Gase’s apparent reputation as an offensive-minded head coach, the Jets’ offense was among the worst in the league, leading them to trade incumbent franchise quarterback Sam Darnold and start anew with second overall pick Zach Wilson.

Jets fans weren’t willing to let bygones be bygones when it came to Gase, leading to a few roasts toward Manning for his ill-fated recommendation.

The Hall of Fame proceedings weren’t entirely dire from a Jets perspective as three former bearers of the green and white were officially granted football immortality. Steve Atwater (1999) and the late Winston Hill (1963-76) were inducted as members of the Hall of Fame’s class of 2020, while Alan Faneca (2008-09) joined with Manning as part of the most recent group.

The modern Jets will partake in their first post-Gase era contest on Saturday night when they battle the New York Giants in a battle of MetLife Stadium bragging rights (7:30 p.m. ET, WNBC).
