The New York Jets suffered a big loss during their joint practice with the Green Bay Packers in Ashwaubenon, Wisconsin. Defensive end Carl Lawson was carted off the field with what appeared to be a leg injury.

More details of the injury have yet to be released.

Lawson has been thoroughly dominant throughout training camp, routinely beating up on talented young left tackle Mekhi Becton. He played one series (3 snaps) in his preseason debut with the Jets last Saturday.

The 26-year-old Auburn product is looking to elevate himself into the elite ranks of the league’s edge rushers. He has consistently produced pressure at a high level of efficiency but has not gotten much national recognition due to his lack of sacks, which was largely due to the minimal amount of talent around him with the Cincinnati Bengals.

Joe Douglas and the Jets signed Lawson to a three-year, $45 million deal with $30 million guaranteed in March.

Ronald Blair and Bryce Huff would be the leading candidates to take over Lawson’s snaps if he were to miss time.

Blair was listed directly behind Lawson as the No. 2 right-side defensive end on the Jets’ first unofficial depth chart. Huff has been taking first-team snaps at the left-side defensive end position in place of Vinny Curry, who is on the active/non-football injury list and is expected to be out until at least Week 2 of the regular season.

Lawson was not the only crucial player who left the field on Thursday. Denzel Mims was seen limping off the field and being tended to by a trainer. Sheldon Rankins left the practice early on with an apparent injury.

Mims grabbed three passes in the Jets’ preseason-opening victory and led the team with 51 receiving yards. He got a long look from the coaching staff, leading all Jets wide receivers with 33 offensive snaps.

Rankins played two series with the Jets’ first-team defense (6 snaps). He showcased a flash of his tantalizing pass-rushing talent with a quarterback hit on Mike Glennon just two plays into the game.

The Jets are scheduled to take on the Packers at Lambeau Field this Saturday at 4:25 p.m. ET for their second preseason game.
