Breece Hall remains unsigned as NY Jets rookies report to training camp
It’s Tuesday, July 19, which means the New York Jets‘ 2022 season is officially kicking into full gear. The team’s rookies are due to report to training camp today. In one week, the rest of the team will report to training camp. The Jets will hold their first practice of training camp next Wednesday (July 27).
However, as the rookies make their way to Florham Park today, rookie running back Breece Hall remains unsigned. Out of the team’s seven draft picks, Hall is the only player who has yet to sign his contract.
Hall, who was selected with the 36th overall pick (fourth pick of the second round), is one of 11 second-round picks from the 2022 draft who remains unsigned. That includes the three players who were drafted ahead of him.
Discussions regarding guaranteed money are the reason we are seeing so many contract holdups with second-round picks this year.
Baylor safety Jalen Pitre, who was selected by the Houston Texans with the 37th overall pick, received a full third-year guarantee in his contract. This is unusual. For instance, the player selected in Hall’s No. 36 slot in 2021 (Jevon Holland) only received a 58% third-year guarantee.
Now that Pitre has set the bar with a full third-year guarantee in the No. 37 slot, each of the three players picked ahead of him will negotiate for the same benefit. The next step for these four players is figuring out how much money should be guaranteed in the fourth year of the contract.
