3 new offensive coordinator candidates emerge for New York Jets
NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport has name-dropped three “strong” candidates in the New York Jets‘ offensive coordinator search: Patriots tight ends coach Nick Caley, Eagles quarterbacks coach Brian Johnson, and former Colts offensive coordinator Marcus Brady.
A few strong candidates for #Jets OC position, though it will be a wide-ranging search and other names will emerge:
— #Patriots TE coach Nick Caley
— #Eagles QB coach Brian Johnson
— Former #Colts OC Marcus Brady— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) January 13, 2023
Interestingly, all three of these coaches are on the less experienced side, which is interesting considering the Jets just cut ties with an inexperienced offensive coordinator in Mike LaFleur. Caley (39), Johnson (35), and Brady (43) are all under 45 years old, and Brady is the only one who has called plays in the NFL; doing so for just two seasons.
Caley has been with the Patriots since 2015. He was an offensive assistant for his first two years and has been a tight ends coach since 2017. Caley also coached fullbacks from 2020 to 2021.
Johnson spent 11 seasons as a quarterbacks coach at the college ranks, holding the position at Utah (2010-13), Mississippi State (2014-16), Houston (2017), and Florida (2018-20). He also doubled as the offensive coordinator in four seasons: at Utah (2012-13), Houston (2017), and Florida (2020).
Johnson was hired as the Eagles’ quarterbacks coach in 2021 and has aided in the development of Jalen Hurts. Prior to coaching, he had a successful college career as a quarterback at Utah, going 26-7 as a starter. He remains the school’s all-time leader in completed passes.
Brady served as the Colts’ offensive coordinator from 2021 until midway through the 2022 season, when he was fired after Week 8. Brady had worked his way up in Indianapolis from assistant quarterbacks coach (2018) to quarterbacks coach (2019-20) to offensive coordinator. Prior to joining the Colts, Brady spent nine seasons coaching in the CFL, including six seasons as an offensive coordinator. He won three CFL championships.
Three weeks after he was fired by the Colts, the Eagles hired Brady as an offensive consultant.
