New York Jets fans breathe a sigh of relief and can bet more comfortably today. As this writer predicted, Cincinnati’s high-octane offensive juggernaut was too much for the Bills to handle, while their defense stymied Josh Allen’s weapons throughout the entire AFC Divisional matchup. Stefon Diggs’s four receptions for 35 yards led the star receiver to yell at his QB on the sideline and then rapidly exit the stadium following the game.

Despite the success of the Bills under Josh Allen, the Jets have not yet had to worry about a divisional Super Bowl title under his watch following the misery of six New England championship rings in the 21st century. The Hoodie went home with his 8-9 record just like the Jets did, and his team is arguably in a worse position for 2023. With the Dolphins set to commit over $120 million in cap space to just four players in 2023 (Terron Armstead, Tyreek Hill, Bradley Chubb, and Xavien Howard), and the Bills facing key free agents (Tremaine Edmunds, Matt Milano) and many questions along their offensive line and skill positions, the time is ripe for the Jets to find their QB and prepare for a run next season.

With the Giants’ blowout 38-7 loss to the Eagles, Jets fans can now bet in peace on whatever Super Bowl odds they choose, knowing that the outcome will not cause them additional pain, other than the fact that the 49ers run their system so much more effectively than the Jets have.

(Speaking of the 49ers’ system, Jets fans wondering why Mike LaFleur ran so much empty formation may have gotten their answer tonight. Kyle Shanahan inexplicably went empty in a couple of third-down situations, including a third-and-two and another third-and-long in which clock-burning would have been a key goal. Maybe the veneration of the Shanahan scheme should be rethought somewhat.)

NFL Championship Weekend: Stage Set

The NFL’s nightmare neutral site scenario did not happen, as Joe Burrow and the Bengals will head to Kansas City for the second consecutive season to compete in the AFC Championship Game. Burrow had it correct when he stated “better send those refunds!” about the preassumed neutral site matchup between the Bills and Chiefs, which totally negated the surging Bengals, winners of 10 consecutive games.

More and more, the Bengals are starting to look like an inevitability, as Burrow simply has a magic touch in the playoffs. This is highlighted by the fact that Burrow is 3-0 against Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs over the last two seasons, including that Championship Game victory last season. Additionally, Mahomes’s high-ankle sprain, while not expected to keep him out of the game, further complicates matters for a Chiefs team that essentially lives and dies by the passing game.

On the NFC side of the coin, the Eagles head to the conference finals after taking care of business against an inferior Giants team, 38-7. Nick Sirianni’s bunch ran the ball down New York’s throats to the tune of 268 yards and a 6.1 YPC average. Jalen Hurts looked like his MVP self, and the Eagles’ offensive line dominated the Giants, barely allowing Hurts to be touched the entire game.

Philadelphia will face a stiffer test in the 49ers next week. Despite San Francisco’s struggles on offense against a strong Cowboys defensive line, Christian McCaffrey & Co. were able to break out in the second half, allowing the 49ers to eke out a 19-12 victory. Their defense smothered Dak Prescott, forcing two interceptions and getting him off his spot throughout the game. Tony Pollard’s high-ankle sprain was a huge difference-maker in the second half, as Dallas’s early running success was stifled.

Brock Purdy looked like a rookie in this game, but he managed to avoid the big mistake (aided by some crucial Cowboys defenders’ drops) and make the throws he needed. He was helped out by a phenomenal circus catch from one of the best tight ends in the game in George Kittle. San Francisco can beat a team in many different ways; don’t discount them next week just because they looked less impressive than Philadelphia against a far stiffer opponent.

FanDuel Sportsbook Super Bowl Odds

Right now, on the FanDuel Sportsbook app, the Kansas City Chiefs are still the slight favorites to win the Super Bowl at +250. However, given the state of Patrick Mahomes’s ankle and the fact that he and the Chiefs’ offense managed only 218 total passing yards against the Jaguars, that might not be a number you want to go with.

The Cincinnati Bengals are right behind them at +260, with the Eagles a close third and +270. Rounding out the foursome are the 49ers at +300.

Although any of these four teams have an excellent chance, I think the 49ers at +300 are a sneaky pick simply because of the hype surrounding the Eagles. Beating up an overachieving but talent-poor Giants team should not have suddenly boosted collective confidence that the Eagles are the team to beat. The 49ers have the run defense to stymie Jalen Hurts and Miles Sanders, headlined by All-Pro linebacker Fred Warner.

Also, the 49ers’ biggest weakness—covering the deep outside part of the field—is still not Hurts’s biggest strength. Hurts’s 39.7% on-target rate (ADJ%) on deep passes ranked 21st out of 34 qualified passers (min. 25 attempts of 20+ yards), and while his 105.2 QB rating and 11:3 TD:INT ratio were stellar, the fact that he was not highly accurate on those passes makes it less likely that this will be the difference-maker in the game.

Overall, when you’re betting on the rest of the NFL Playoffs with FanDuel Sportsbook’s $150 promo, resist the hype and the Vegas money train. After all, that’s exactly what the house is looking for.
