Breaking down Sauce Gardner’s film: How can the New York Jets star still improve?
Part one of our Sauce Gardner film breakdown was released earlier this offseason. Now it’s time for part two, and we have a special guest to help us break down the young superstar: former New York Jets cornerback Marcus Coleman.
Coleman was drafted by the Jets out of Texas Tech in the fifth round of the 1996 draft. He turned out to be a steal, playing 91 games (47 starts) for the Jets over six seasons (1996-2001).
Coleman recorded 249 tackles and 14 interceptions during his Jets career. Additionally, Coleman joins Darrelle Revis and Antonio Cromartie as the only Jets cornerbacks to record three consecutive seasons with 12+ passes defended since the stat was first tracked in 1999.

As we touched on in the first Gardner film review, Sauce had a special 2022 season, displaying numerous elite traits that you rarely see from rookies. These traits made him an instant top-flight corner and should allow him to be a star for years to come.
However, we also identified some weaknesses that Gardner got away with – ones that could come back to bite him in the future more often than they did in 2022. If Gardner can iron out these weaknesses, he will be able to remain consistently dominant on a yearly basis going forward.
The perspective of a former NFL starting cornerback can help us understand the full story of Gardner’s rookie season.
- Where can Gardner improve?
- Was Gardner slightly overrated?
- What are the skills/traits that make Gardner special?
All of these questions and many more are answered by Marcus Coleman in this edition of Blewett’s Blitz!
