New York Jets turn their attention to another big-name free agent RB

Not long ago, it seemed like an inevitability that Dalvin Cook would be joining the New York Jets. Cook flew to New York, visited the Jets facility, and watched a training camp practice. He also went on national television and claimed the odds of him joining the Jets were “pretty high”.

But Cook left the area without a contract. More than a week has passed since Cook’s visit and nothing has materialized between the two sides.

Now, the Jets appear to be showing interest in a different household-name running back: Ezekiel Elliott.

According to Jeff Howe of The Athletic, the Jets are one of three teams who have shown interest in Elliott.

Howe writes, “The Patriots have remained highly interested in Ezekiel Elliott, and the Cowboys are also in the mix to re-sign the 28-year-old, according to league sources. The New York Jets have also been in on Elliott.”

Elliott, who recently turned 28, was released by the Cowboys in March. Across seven seasons with the Cowboys, Elliott racked up 10,598 yards from scrimmage and 80 touchdowns.

In 2022, Elliott showed signs of significant decline as he averaged career lows in yards per carry (3.8) and yards per reception (5.4). He did manage to collect 12 rushing touchdowns, however, and he also finished the season without fumbling a single time. Overall, Elliott recorded 876 rushing yards and 92 receiving yards in 15 games.

Back in March, it was reported that Elliott had his eyes on the Jets as a preferred destination, but Jets head coach Robert Saleh appeared to shoot down the rumors. When asked about Elliott, Saleh simply stated, “We love our running back room. I’ll leave it at that.”
