Is the Minnesota Vikings’ hot streak sustainable?

Before you rush to use your ESPN Bet Promo Code to bet on this week’s Sunday Night Football game, there’s some stuff we need to talk about.

The Minnesota Vikings are one of the hottest teams in the NFL. Their five-game win streak is the longest active streak in the NFL. But how sustainable is this streak?

Like last year, the Vikings have suddenly found themselves unbeatable in close games.

During their five-game win streak, four have come by one score. Of course, some would say this is just things evening out after the 1-4 in one-score games in their first five games. Others might point out that the Vikings have played nine one-score games in 10 weeks, which itself is unsustainable.

So what’s changed? What has allowed the Vikings to get back to their winning ways in one-score games? It’s the defense early in games.

The Vikings are giving up just 6 first-half points per game during their five-game win streak. During their 1-4 start they were allowing 12.6 first-half points per game.

It should be noted though, that this change came as they took on the New Orleans Saints, Atlanta Falcons, Chicago Bears, and Green Bay Packers four of the worst offenses in the NFL. Things don’t get much harder for them though.

Over the course of the rest of the season, they play the Packers, Bears, and Las Vegas Raiders. Though the two games against the Lions and one against the Cincinnati Bengals will be an interesting test.

Perhaps the biggest question is the play of quarterback Joshua Dobbs. He’s been fantastic for the Vikings, but his historical numbers suggest a dropoff is coming. He’s severely outproduced his career norms since arriving in Minnesota.

That said, the Vikings supporting cast is by far the best he’s ever played with. That’s not to mention Justin Jefferson’s eventual return from injury. It’s become much more common knowledge in recent years that most quarterbacks will have their play elevated with elite pass catchers around them, rather than the other way around.

The conclusion here is that the Vikings are playing over their heads. They found an easy patch in their schedule and have taken full advantage. If they continue to do so they may even find themselves in the playoffs.

Just don’t expect them to be competing much with the best teams in the NFL.

Denver Broncos vs. Minnesota Vikings Odds at ESPN Bet

  • Denver Broncos -2.5 (-110) vs. Minnesota Vikings
  • Minnesota Vikings +2.5 (-110) at Denver Broncos
  • Denver Broncos -140 moneyline vs. Minnesota Vikings
  • Minnesota Vikings +120 moneyline at Denver Broncos
  • Over-Under Points Total 42.5 (O -115 / U -105)

Two hot teams go head to head as they attempt to keep their surprising playoff hopes alive. Does ESPN Bet see much between these teams?

Not really, no.

The home Denver Broncos are the favorites at -2.5. They’re given -140 odds to win the game outright. Meanwhile, the visiting Minnesota Vikings are given +120 odds to get their fifth road win in six games this season.

The point total for this one is interesting considering the success of Josh Dobbs and Russell Wilson in recent weeks. ESPN Bet has it set at over/under 42.5 points. The Broncos have been under that number in three of their last four games.

However, the Vikings have topped that number in each of their last two games.
