How Important is the AFC No. 1 Seed?

A lot is made about the top seed in the NFL playoffs every year—even more so now that there’s a seven-team playoff and only one team gets the bye week. But how much does it actually matter?

The six-team playoff first came into existence during the 1982 NFL season (1983 playoffs). Since that season, the No. 1 seed in a conference has reached the Super Bowl 34 times in 41 chances. That means a No. 1 seed has reached the Super Bowl 82.9% of the time. So yeah, it’s pretty good to be the top seed.

That’s exactly what’s at stake on Sunday night when these teams face off.

The Ravens currently own that top spot in the AFC, and with a two-game lead over the Jaguars could eliminate Jacksonville from contention with a win. However, a loss could open the door for the Jaguars, as well as the Miami Dolphins, Kansas City Chiefs, and even the Cleveland Browns.

Just in case you needed any other reason to be locked in for this game, there’s no bigger reason than the battle for the No. 1 seed on the AFC side of the NFL tournament.

ESPN Bet NFL Week 15 Odds: Jacksonville Jaguars vs. Baltimore Ravens

ESPN Bet has some pretty interesting thoughts on this one. It’s not every day that an 8-5 team is a home underdog.

That’s right, the Jaguars are 3.5-point home underdogs in this one. They’re given +150 odds to pull off the upset in this one. Meanwhile, the Ravens are given -175 odds to come away with the win.

Surprisingly, despite the two offenses of these teams, ESPN Bet doesn’t expect many points. The point total is set at over/under 42.5 points.

To put that into perspective, the Jaguars have gone over that in five straight games, while the Ravens have done so in seven of their last eight games.
