Robert Saleh does not appear concerned about his job security with the New York Jets
Robert Saleh is not worrying about his future with the New York Jets.
At his media availability on Monday, the Jets’ head coach said, “I’m just coaching to try to beat Washington” when asked if he felt he is coaching for his job. Saleh elaborated on this point when asked if the thought had crossed his mind.
“No, two types of coaches, Rich. Those who have been fired, and those who are about to get fired, my man. We coach in the moment. We coach to win a football game.”
Saleh also said that he is not considering staff changes this week, stating that “once we get to those bridges, we’ll cross them.”
Additionally, Saleh said he feels the Jets’ locker room is still together and behind him.
“Yeah, I think the locker room does a great job of playing for one another; that’s first and foremost. You always play for the man next to you, but from there, yeah, I think this team is still bought in; I think this team still plays for one another,” said Saleh.
“I think this team still loves one another, and I’ll speak for everyone in that we are frustrated that we haven’t been able to string together some wins, but I do appreciate the way we go out and fight, but we just have to find a way to be successful.”
It is evident that the Jets’ messaging is focused on finishing the season strong, despite their struggles and being eliminated from playoff contention. Considering prior reports and rumors, it seems the organization would like to end the season on a good note to allow Saleh to roll into 2024.
However, another blowout loss along with pointed comments from players may have begun to reveal kinks in the armor of the Jets’ locker room.
On merits alone, there is a considerable argument for Saleh to be relieved of his duties as the team’s head coach. Even with poor roster building from the general manager, Saleh’s teams have come out flat far too often and have been blown off the field in many key games.
New York may want to chalk up the 2023 season as a mulligan, but if the Jets continue to play like they did Sunday, it will be very hard to justify that decision.
