NY Jets’ Garrett Wilson calls 2023 ‘the worst year of his life’

After the conclusion of the 2023 regular season, the NY Jets’ star wide receiver expresses what he wants the team to change

The New York Jets’ star receiver had some honest comments regarding the team’s offense and his own performance in 2023.

At his end-of-season media availability, Garrett Wilson said that the Jets cannot repeat the same mistakes they made next season.

“What happened this season can’t happen again, is how I feel about it. It’s got to be better. We’ve got to make adjustments in the game; we gotta do things to counter what we are getting and be able to put points on the board,” said Wilson.

“The two years I’ve been here have been tough, & football hasn’t been this hard, as far as offense. When I watch it on the sideline, it doesn’t look that hard for the other team. We’ve got to figure out something to get it rolling no matter who’s slinging it.”

The receiver also added that, despite his success in 2023, it “was the worst year of his life.”

On Tuesday, the Ohio State product expanded on his remarks from the previous day. Wilson, appearing on ESPN Radio’s “Bart and Hahn,” said the Jets “let him vent” about his concerns and provided “insightful answers” regarding his concerns.

The receiver also said that to fix the Jets’ offense, all they need is quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

“Aaron is the offense. I’m serious. Not just his play. He’s going to call … he’s going to do some stuff to change the play, to get to a call. It really unlocks a side of offense that’s, whenever you’re running it, it works well. If Aaron is out there doing what he does, it’s truly an offense in itself.”

Wilson’s comments not only show the care and competitive drive that he has but also reveal what one of the team’s main issues is.

The receiver has, on two separate occasions, illuminated the Jets’ inability to adjust on offense and how they failed to generate consistent offense.

Whether intentional or not, the comments fall on Nathaniel Hackett and the Jets’ offensive staff. Stale playcalling and a lack of innovation on offense have evidently been noticed by the players.

Aaron Rodgers should help fix some of the team’s issues, but without wholesale changes from Hackett and the offensive staff, the possibility for repeat issues still exists.
