At first, Edwards did not think anything of the incident occurring.
“I walk into the locker room after work, and basically, I hear about four rows behind me arguing about music and how it was being played too loud. So I’m not paying attention, and I was just minding my business.”
The noise began to escalate, and once Edwards heard a thud, he said he got up and turned around.
“And then I see the guy for what I was thinking was reaching for a phone underneath the victim grabs the back of the victim’s head by the hair, and he was about to slam it down on the counter,” Edwards said.
Edwards said he subdued the attacker, who was 25 years old, from continuing to attack the victim, who was 80 years old. Additionally, Edwards did not know the assault victim was in danger of losing his life.
“I didn’t know it was that serious; I mean, the victim probably had a serious concussion and things of that nature, but it wasn’t until I talked to Detective Jacobs down in Farmington who told me that if I didn’t step in. But at the end of the day, that’s what you do.”
Edwards was best known for his on-field accomplishments. Along with being one of the most prolific wide receivers in University of Michigan history, Edwards was a successful NFL wideout with 40 career touchdowns, 11 of which came with the Jets.
Now retired, it is good to see that Edwards, a trusty target in his playing days, could be relied upon once more to step up in a critical situation.
