Sauce Gardner is eager to lead the New York Jets’ incoming rookies

Sauce Gardner is already looking to step into a mentor role for the 2024 season.

In an interview with New York Jets team reporter Caroline Hendershot, recently drafted Qwan’tez Stiggers spoke about learning from Gardner and the other players in the cornerback room.

“When I go in there, I might be Sauce’s best friend. That’s how much I want to learn,” said Stiggers.

Responding to Stiggers’s comment, Gardner obliged the rookie’s request. He said that he is still learning and is looking forward to doing so with Stiggers. Gardner also offered to help the rookie with anything he needed.

It is great to see Gardner already willing to step up as a mentor on the Jets.

Heading into his third season, nobody would be surprised if Gardner just wanted to focus on his craft and not worry about his surroundings. He is not a veteran and would not be expected to be a prominent leader on the team.

However, Gardner is cut from a different cloth. Despite his significant accomplishments, he is willing to help a rookie gain his footing in the NFL and welcomes the responsibility of being a mentor and team leader for the Jets.

Stiggers has talent and potential, as evidenced by his winning the Canadian Football League’s Most Outstanding Rookie award. He has great ball skills, which resulted in him racking up five interceptions.

If he pans out, Stiggers can be a long-term option alongside Gardner. As a result, Gardner’s willingness to help the rookie is helping both Stiggers and the Jets in the long term.
