Only two more days until the speculation can end

On Monday morning, the NFL officially announced that it is unveiling its full 2024 schedule at 8 p.m. ET on Wednesday, May 15. The news ends a period of speculation as to when the schedule would be unveiled, as some reports claimed it would come out last Thursday before the league ultimately pushed it back.

Now that we know for sure when the schedule is dropping, rumors about potential matchups are spreading like wildfire, and fans are eating up every breadcrumb they can find. NFL stars are partaking in the rumor-spreading extravaganza, including five-time Pro Bowler George Kittle. The San Francisco 49ers’ tight end hinted at a potential season-opening matchup against the New York Jets with this post to his Instagram story.

We know the Jets will play the 49ers in Santa Clara this season. However, we will have to wait until Wednesday night to find out when the game will be played.

While it is unclear whether Kittle is actually hinting at a Jets-49ers opener or if he is even aware of the 49ers’ schedule at all, it wouldn’t be shocking if the NFL chose this matchup as one of its Week 1 prime-time games.

Both teams are viewed as A-list box-office draws. The 49ers are the reigning NFC champions and many sportsbooks have them as the current favorites to win Super Bowl 59. The Jets are a hot ticket as long as they have Aaron Rodgers, as evidenced by their five prime-time games last season.

In addition, Rodgers has a long history with the 49ers. A childhood 49ers fan, Rodgers grew up in northern California and attended college in the Bay Area at UC Berkeley. San Francisco passed on him in the 2005 draft, and while Rodgers has earned one championship ring to the 49ers’ zero, his childhood team has given him major trouble in the postseason; Rodgers has an 0-4 playoff record against the 49ers.

It wouldn’t be surprising if it turns out Kittle’s post truly was a hint of what’s to come.
