Diving deeper into Olu Fashanu’s film: How can he put it all together to become a stud OT for the New York Jets?
Weeks before the New York Jets selected him with the 11th overall pick in the 2024 NFL draft, we broke down Olu Fashanu’s film to see whether he lived up to the hype as a potential first-round target for New York. While we found plenty of positives in his game that gave him an intriguing ceiling, there were also some concerning weaknesses that made him seem slightly overrated – at least by the crowd that viewed him as the clear-cut OT2 in the class. He seemed like a potentially risky pick if they took him over certain players.
As it turns out, Fashanu was not the OT2 in the class. After the Chargers unsurprisingly made Joe Alt the first OT off the board at No. 5, the Titans surprised many by making JC Latham the second OT off the board at No. 7, leaving Fashanu for the Jets as OT3.
This lines up closer with what I saw on film. While Latham was the public’s consensus OT4, I was a vocal advocate of Latham for OT1, and he was indeed drafted far earlier than most expected. With the Jets taking Fashanu at No. 11 as the third OT off the board, it made him a reasonable value based on what I saw on film.
Now that Fashanu is officially a Jet, it’s time to dive back into his film.
After analyzing Fashanu’s 2023 season in the first review, we turn our attention to his 2022 season, which some argued was even better than his 2023 campaign. Was Fashanu really better in 2022? What does he need to work on to maximize his tools and become a complete player? Is he prepared to fill in as a starter in Year 1?
All of those questions are answered in the latest Blewett’s Blitz film review, breaking down 34 plays of Olu Fashanu.
