While he has not been in the area for an extended period of time, the New York Jets first-round pick is already making a significant impact.

Rookie offensive tackle Olu Fashanu visited children at the Goryeb Children’s Hospital in Morristown, N.J. The first-round selection took multiple pictures with the children and signed autographs for them in their rooms.

As talented as he is on the field, Fashanu is just as important with his work off of it. Known for a broad smile and kind demeanor, the tackle’s off-the-field work dates back to his high school and college days.

In an article from First Round Mock, Fashanu detailed his start to volunteering at the Father McKenna homeless shelter in college.

“The homeless shelter, it was right next to the high school that I went to, Gonzaga. It came back to my freshman year, in our religion class, they just told us about these opportunities to go and volunteer at the homeless shelter. And honestly, I was just thinking like, ‘Why not?’”

Fashanu’s generosity continued in college, as he participated in the “Lift For Life” fundraiser. According to the article, the offensive lineman raised $2,700, the highest amount raised at his position by $1,000.

The Jets drafted Fashanu for his on-the-field prowess, hoping he could develop into a stalwart player who can hold down offensive tackle for the next decade. But even though he might not be a starter just yet, Fashanu is already making a giant impact on the community.
